Skútustađagígar Craters (What To See - North East)

The pseudo craters at Skútustađagígar where formed when lava flows ran over the wetlands creating gas explosions that sculptured the craters. These kinds of gas explosions occur when hot lava instantly cools down by coming in contact with cold water or ice. The area is a popular bird watching outpost like Lake Mývatn, offering a great variety of interesting birds, especially ducks. The pseudo craters are now a part of a natural conservation area.
