Akureyri - The Capital of the NorthŚis a cultural and educational centre in North Iceland with a population of about 20000 people, making it the second largest city in Iceland. Akureyri offers a great variety of activities, museums, attractions, shops, restaurants, etc., and is vibrant town, beautifully situated in the tranquil Eyjafj÷r­ur Fjord where everyone should be able to find something to their liking. In winter skiing at Mt. HlÝ­arfjall, one of Iceland┤s best skiing areas, just outside the town is an option suitable for the whole family and is a popular destinations for Icelandic families going on winter vacations. Akureyri also has one of the best swimming pools in Iceland for both kids and adults, where you will find many hot tubs and saunas as well as numerous water slides for the kids. In summer, Lystigar­urinn or the Botanical garden is a great place to visit with it┤s great variety of trees, shrubs and perennials. Also south of Akureyri is one of Icelands most popular outdoor area, Kjarnaskˇgur woods, where you will find playgrounds for kids, an outdoor gym, volleyball courts, barbecue houses and picnic areas. There are about 12 kilometers of hiking trails in the woodlands and restrooms are found there as well. It is a great place for a relaxing stroll and picnic for the whole family. There are numerous options for dining in Akureyri, from fast foods to fine dining restaurants, so everyone should find something to their liking. Akureyri has an airport, located in the outskirts of the town and there are regular daily flights available between ReykjavÝk and Akureyri. There are numerous places of interest within a few hours drive from Akureyri. To mention only a few, Waterfall Go­afoss, Lake Mřvatn and Dimmuborgir, ┴sbyrgi Canyon, Dettifoss Waterfall and H˙savÝk. All these places can be reached in a day trip from Akureyri. There are many hotels and guesthouses at Akureyri. Regardless of summer or winter, Akureyri is sure to be a great destination with all the things it has to offer.
