Fjašrįrgljśfur Canyon (What To See - South East)
Fjašrįrgljśfur Canyon is a gorgeous canyon formed about 9000 years ago. It is located a few km to the west of Kirkjubęjarklaustur, close to the main highway. The Fjašrį River runs through the 100 meter deep canyon where visitors can, if they are prepared to, wade the river. On the eastern edge, there is also a trail where you can walk alongside the canyon to view the amazing craftsmanship of Mother Nature from above. If you are on road 1 heading east towards Skaftafell, make a left on 206 towards Lakagķgar and to Fjašrįrgljśfur. Continue on 205 for about 2 km until you will reach the parking area for the canyon. The road is gravel (2021). At the parking lot there are restrooms but they may not be open and serviced in winter. From here you have two options for exploring the canyon: One is to explore it from the top of the canyon where you will see a marked hiking trail. Follow this trail for about 2 km to the end of the canyon. Along the way you will find numerous viewpoints. The second option is to walk down to the base of the canyon, located immediately to the left of the parking lot for some river adventure. This will require some waterproof gear as there will be several river crossings, and depending on rainfall the water may be quite high. Please always be careful at the canyon both in winter and summer as the trails can be slippery due to mud in summer and snow and ice in winter. Please remember to wear good hiking boots. It is also a good idea to bring along some snacks as there are no shops or restaurants nearby. Many tours and travel options to Fjašrįrgljśfur Canyon can be found at www.icelandroadtrip.com
